I finally ducked down Court St, saw the Driftless Cafe and found what I've been looking for. A cafe that serves great coffee and a variety of wonderful cafe fare, much prepared with local and/or natural ingredients.

For dinner I went back to the Driftless café and had my best meal of the trip so far. It was a dish called garlic beef. I think it was grass fed beef cut into strips and cooked with savory spices. This was served on a bed of rice with some vegetables. The best part of the meal was the salad that was served before the main dish.
A ridiculously simple salad at that. Just some big leafs of lettuce, some strips of onion, and a couple of other veggies. It also had some lightly pickled garlic scape in it. I had never had garlic scape before. It was very aesthetically pleasing in addition to having really good flavor. I am going to try and find some when I get back to New York. The salad was served with a small side of blue cheese. Not overly complicated just very fresh.
Personally I think food tastes just so much better when one uses organic fresh local ingredients. It’s hard to beat a simple dish made without any compromise
