Earthy, cozy and ever so slightly funky Viroqua’s nicest restaurant serves local trout, piping-hot pizzas heaped with veggies, and homey pies and cakes. July/August 2011 Issue

I finally ducked down Court St, saw the Driftless Cafe and found what I've been looking for. A cafe that serves great coffee and a variety of wonderful cafe fare, much prepared with local and/or natural ingredients. September 2007
On my way back to MN I decided to take the scenic route. The drive to Viroqua was beautiful. The town itself is cute and the main street has some unique shops. The Driftless Cafe had the vibe of an arty organic restaurant. I was so relieved that they had a slice of veggie pizza ready to go because I was not about to order a whole one. The crust was wonderful- crunchy and doughy at the same time. Definitely a great place to stop for lunch. September 2010
Another one of the shining stars for this area...(100+miles) The Driftless Cafe has excellent food, atmosphere, service, live music...
And surprisingly the best pizza for miles... (the pizza outside of Tri state -NY area is mostly horrid across the nation with the odd island oasis here and there... Don't even try to deny this- ) For Pizza.. this place would be a trickling spring in a barren land... most people in this area.. and most places I have been in around the nation think frozen factory made pizza cut into tiny pieces is pizza... you poor things... This cafe is a total treasure! Year round you can try great soups and pizzas full of surprising combinations. My favorite pizza is a taste extravaganza called "K's Kitchen" with cilantro pesto sauce, artichokes, capers and carmelized onions. There are also wonderful nightly specials including curries and pasta dishes. The curries tend to run to the hot side and are full of a deep blending of flavors. My favorite pasta dish is Cajun Pasta that is a complex combo of cajun spices, tomatoes, olives, greens, peppers and feta cheese over the most playful swirly pasta. There's always a fun selection of desserts with the pies taking the top ranking with super crusts. You can only go right going to the Driftless Cafe which is running brilliantly these days under the skillful eye of John Tully and a great staff.
We stop in a few times a month at the Driftless Cafe & always have good service & a great meal. Their pizzas are to die for! they also have a large selection of beers & wines available. They use local ingredients & mostly organic. I would recommend to anyone.
The Driftless has excellent pizza, breads, soups and sandwiches. They also offer specials like pasta with or without meat, and vegetarian dishes. I usually would rather eat at home, but am never disappointed with this place. In fact their salads are better than my homemade. They use local produce, humanely raised meat and I think largely organic ingredients in all their homemade offerings. They also serve beer (quite a variety) and wine. They have a small space, but it is very comfortable, booths, lots of wood all around (including trees as posts) and local artists work on display. Some evenings there is music and an improv group performs there from time to time. For casual, comfortable dining there is no better in Viroqua and it is priced pretty reasonably. Closed these days on Sunday and Monday.

For lunch, we ate at the Driftless Cafe. I ordered a burger made with locally grown and grass fed beef and Keith had a chicken curry with seasonal vegetables and rice. The burger was perfectly cooked with just a hint of pinkness. It was very juicy and flavorful. The curry was mild yet creamy and luscious. I even dipped my potato chips in the sauce. Exquisite. For dinner I went back to the Driftless Café and had my best meal of the trip so far. It was a dish called garlic beef. I think it was grass fed beef cut into strips and cooked with savory spices. This was served on a bed of rice with some vegetables.
The best part of the meal was the salad that was served before the main dish. A ridiculously simple salad at that. Just some big leafs of lettuce, some strips of onion, and a couple of other veggies. It also had some lightly pickled garlic scape in it.
I had never had garlic scape before. It was very aesthetically pleasing in addition to having really good flavor. I am going to try and find some when I get back to New York. The salad was served with a small side of blue cheese. Not overly complicated just very fresh.
Personally I think food tastes just so much better when one uses organic fresh local ingredients. It’s hard to beat a simple dish made without any compromise

It was late afternoon when we got back in the saddle and rode back to the car, and headed for Viroqua for our reunion at the Driftless Cafe for pizza, beer and good company. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the valley.

Viroqua Venture into the Driftless Area for amazing terrain that’s about as close to mountainous as Wisconsin becomes. Viroqua calls itself the doorway to this region, replete with organic farms, enough to support a year-round farmers’ market on Saturday mornings.
Sold at lovingly restored buildings is everything from art and wine to antiques and fossils to avant-garde literature and fine jewelry. Watch for clever retail names on Main Street – Ewetopia Fiber Shop, Finicky Frog – and global awareness at Driftless Fair Traders, where sales of imports provide Third World craftspeople with a living wage.
Order quiche, pizza or the daily plate at Driftless Café, 118 West Court Street, where customers laze and linger because it feels like home

ONE OF OUR EARLIEST REVIEWS & AWARDS FROM DISCOVER WISCONSIN (circa 2007)

Discover Wisconsin
We have our first Restaurant Pick of the Month ever from Viroqua, Wisconsin, a town of about 4,000 residents in the Kickapoo Valley region of our state. The restaurant is named the Driftless Café, after the area of SW Wisconsin known as the “driftless” area, untouched by the glaciers from long ago. The Driftless Café is an absolute delight. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant serves fresh, local,...cuisine.
The Driftless Café is known for its breads and pizza, with special pizza items that include roasted red pepper, artichoke hearts, caramel onions and roasted garlic. The café loves to take an ordinary item and make it extraordinary.. The restaurant is well-known for its Panini sandwiches. I had the roast beef Panini with wasabi mustard, cheese, onion and tomato.
From homemade soups to a quiche of the day, and a fresh bakery daily, this unpretentious but stylish restaurant will have you coming back again and again. The restaurant also features live acoustic music from area musicians, plus local artists showing their wares throughout the restaurant walls. The hardwood floors add to the creative element of the restaurant, which has a seating capacity of 50. Congratulations to the Driftless Café in Viroqua, Wisconsin as our Restaurant Pick of the Month.

In Downtown Viroqua, [the] casual Driftless Cafe serves great coffee and espresso as well as delicious local fare—homemade soups, salads, fresh-baked sourdough bread and pizza—about 80 percent of which is made with local ingredients. Daily specials are heavy on the veggies, but the staff is happy to add meat if you wish. Their organic fair trade coffee is from local microroaster Kickapoo Coffee, and they serve microbrews like New Glarus and Sand Creek as well as very nice trade wines. Half the town seems to pass through this cozy place sometime during the day—it's a community gathering spot as well as an eatery.
